Water-jet technologies for nuclear submarines decommissioning and other industrial applications

Water-jet cutting technologies for utilization of nuclear submarines and other industrial applications

Objectives

  • Application of water-jet cutting technologies for commercial civil orders;
  • Development and test of a set of equipment for water-jet cutting to dismantle nuclear and other submarines;
  • Development and test of a set of equipment for water-jet cutting with the use of robot-manipulator.

Summary

Main directions of activities of RFNC-VNIITF:

  • Design and tests of nuclear charges;
  • R&D and experimental development.

Main directions of activity of RFNC-VNIITF department which implements the project:

  • R&D and experimental development in the field of water-jet cutting technologies, including keeping personnel and equipment ready to carry out emergency work;

Main applications of water-jet cutting technologies:

  • Development of technologies and hardware for water-jet cutting and cleaning;
  • Rendering services to regional industrial enterprises related, namely cleaning and cutting by water-jet equipment;
  • Dismantling of complicated building and engineering constructers;
  • Metal cutting;
  • Cleaning of pipes in communal utilities and gas-and oil enterprises;
  • Dismantling of nuclear and diesel submarines;
  • Repair and dismantling of river and sea ships.

As a result of Project implementation 50-55 employees of RFNC-VNIITF will be involved exclusively in implementation of non-military tasks under the project.

Cost

Total cost of the project is £197,000. The BERR's contribution is £197,000.

Duration

36 months - starting June 2005.
