Title

Establish a laboratory for the manufacture of sophisticated prescription lenses.

Objectives

UralOptic Ltd aims to set up an advanced laboratory in Snezhinsk for the manufacture of sophisticated prescription lenses. It will provide a central manufacturing facility for opticians, optical clinics and companies operating in the Urals.

The laboratory will be equipped to operate in a competitive environment, producing up to 40,000 high-quality spectacle lenses during the first year and up to 80,000 items at full production capacity.

19 high-skilled professionals will be employed by UralOptic, 10 of whom will be recruited from VNIITF.

Summary

UralOptic was registered in December 1993. It is engaged in the wholesale of lenses, frames, optical and ophthalmologic equipment for spectacles.

Implementation of the project will allow:

  • Competitive advantages for the enterprise to expand its market niche by a factor of 2.
  • Better health and quality of life for people in the Urals region, provided by the provision of high-quality lenses customized to individual needs.

The project promotes non-proliferation, as it utilizes the educated and highly skilled workforce available at VNIITF, employing them in a venture far removed from the weapons market.

Total cost of the project is £301,965. The DTI is contributing £195,000.
