The aim of this project is to construct a test bed for Oxygen-18 isotope production technology
adjustment.
Summary
Oxygen-18 is a stable isotope for which there is a rapidly increasing demand worldwide as a raw
material for the production of Fluorine-18, which is widely used in Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
to monitor brain function. The main customers for 18-O are hospitals and medical centres that have
PET facilities or radio-pharmaceutical manufacturers who supply these facilities.
This project is to create a test bed laboratory for Oxygen-18 isotope production at SCK. This test
bed will be used to prove the separating cascade production technology developed at SCK and will
subsequently become a part of the full-scale production facility.
