Background

CNCP projects in Uzbekistan

Institute of Nuclear Physics

Interview with Umar Salikhbayev, Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics

Ilkham Sadykov, Head of the INP Commercialisation Unit

Co-operation of CNCP and Institute of Nuclear Physics

The Institute management first met CNCP representatives in September 2003 to discuss commercialisation of scientifi c R&D and the creation of new jobs.

Active collaboration on projects began in summer 2004; many proposals were reviewed then, with 3 being selected by CNCP experts. These projects included water purification, gemstone colouration through irradiation, and manufacture of sealed radioactive sources of gamma radiation. In 2005 CNCP funded fully fledged market research in these three areas, involving 24 INP specialists, including 13 former weapon scientists.

In April 2006 the Programme provided grants to implement these projects, with overall funding of over £210,000. As a result, 89 new jobs have been established.

Aside from funding individual projects, CNCP is conducting active educational activities. Thus, Institute representatives have participated in three seminars in marketing industrial goods and services, and business planning. A number of employees have attended one-month business English training courses in Great Britain. CNCP organized and paid for training of 12 people in management courses under the British Open University’s programme and trained two employees on diploma courses at the same University.

Institute representatives have participated in study-tours to Great Britain, which helped the participants explore British experience in the commercialisation of scientific R&D.

Currently 7 projects have been approved for funding with overall grants of £361,775. Despite high scientific-technical potential and available R&D, these projects have not been implemented due to a lack of funding and commercial expertise.
